THE NEW YORK COSMOS

Established in 1971, the New York Cosmos competed in the North American Soccer League until 1984 and were the strongest franchise in that league, both financially and competitively. This success enabled the team to sign stars of the World game like Brazilian Pele and German Franz Beckenbauer. The acquisistion of these players made the team into the most glamorous team in the World and contributed significantly to the growth of soccer in the US.

However, after the retirement of Pele the appeal of the team, and the League, declined resulting in their withdrawal from competition and the team was dissolved in 1984.

After numerous attempts to revive the well known name in the '90's the New York Cosmos, led by their Honorary President Pele, announced in August 2010 that they would reform representing the metropolitan New York. This range celebrates the return of the legend that is - NEW YORK COSMOS

Umbro has applied its celebrated football-tailoring ethos to a new on-field performance kit and off-field lifestyle line for Spring Summer 2011, as part of the recent rebirth of legendary soccer club The New York Cosmos. The collection features New York Cosmos Shirts, which includes the New York Cosmos home shirt and goalkeeper shirt and a fashion range. The Cosmos were an on-pitch manifestation of all things New York – aspiration, hard work, glamour and success - a potent formula generated by the cosmopolitan mixture within the team, which included footballing greats such as Pelé and Giorgio Chinaglia. During its existence from 1971-1985, The New York Cosmos were never shy about making a statement and were ahead of their time in the design of their kit. In addition to their stellar performance on-pitch – which won them five national championships – their on-pitch style was shown through numerous kit changes over the course of a season. The Cosmos uniform remains the stuff of legends. In putting the initial modern-day New York Cosmos collection together, the Umbro design team was inspired by The New York Cosmos kit from 1977, worn by Pelé and its star players during a special season in which Pelé played his last ever professional game. The influence of this legendary New York Cosmos shirt can be seen in the new New York Cosmos home kit, central to the Spring Summer 11 collection.
